San Juan Unified School District desired an all-steel building to minimize future maintenance costs. The District also desired a design that was adaptable to many school sites in the District. Thus, CYS provided structural engineering services for a new 9,920 SF classroom wing with a vertical load bearing system consisting of hot-rolled steel frames regularly spaced at 10 ft. on center so as to change the size of the building upon the District’s discretion for each reuse of the design. The building’s lateral system was also designed with modularity in mind by employing prefabricated steel shear wall elements supplied by Hardy Frames, Inc.
