CYS was the structural engineer for this design/build project consisting of seismic corrections on seven buildings at the UC Davis Campus: Academic Surge, The Barn, Bainer Hall (East Wing), Briggs Hall, Chemistry 194, Telecom and Vet Med 2. The corrective measures range from foundation and shear wall work in wood-frame buildings – – to foundation, shear wall, moment frame and braced-frame connections in concrete buildings — to strengthening long-span seismic joints in concrete buildings.
The proposed retrofit scheme in the bridging documents for the Briggs Hall required a working space within lab areas that was unacceptable to the building user due to ongoing, uninterruptible research. CYS was tasked with revising the proposed strengthening details to minimize the construction impact to the user. This was done in a very timely manner which minimized change order costs and project schedule.
