CYS assisted the Marysville Joint Unified School District with the structural evaluation of two existing unreinforced brick masonry buildings for an order-of-magnitude study to determine the feasibility of returning the structures to school occupancy. The buildings are approximately 8,790 SF and 22,690 SF respectively and were designed and constructed in the late 1920’s prior to the passing of the Field Act. The structural recommendations considered using shotcrete to strengthen the URM walls and provide a new complete lateral force-resisting system for each building. Steel columns and concrete foundations were also considered to support existing roof trusses. New structural sheathing was considered as an overlay to bolster the flexible wood diaphragms constructed of straight sheathing.
